- 1). Clamp the bit into a vise so the cutting end is extending horizontally out from vise. Adjust the bit in the vise so the knife-like edge is on top. It should be pointed away from you.
- 2). Grasp the file by the handle and lay the abrasive part on the bit. Examine the spot where the file touches the bit. You will see the knife edge has an angle to it.
- 3). Tilt the file up or down so the angle of the file matches the angle of the knife edge.
- 4). Push forward on the file and pull it back, maintaining the angle as you continue the process. Pick up the file and check your progress. You should see a shiny edge on the knife where you have been filing. If the edge is not shiny all the way out to the end of the knife, adjust your angle and try again until the edge is consistently shiny.
- 5). Revolve the bit in the vise so the opposing dull edge is facing up. Sharpen it exactly like you did the previous one.
