ACL

Updated June 10, 2014.

Definition:

The ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament is a primary stabilizing ligament within the center of the knee joint that prevents hyperextension and excessive rotation of the joint.

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) are the two major ligaments in the knee that work together to provide stability in the knee. They cross each other and form an 'X' which allows the knee to flex and extend without side to side movement.

A complete tear of the ACL necessitating reconstruction could require up to 12 months of rehabilitation.
