- Political sketch comedy is a relevant way to keep your audience engaged with the actors. Examples of such comedy were on Saturday Night Live during the 2008 presidential elections when actress Tina Fey portrayed Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Once you have decided what political members or parties to recreate, create a caricature of the situation or people involved. Draw upon either current or historical political situations.
- Pop culture is a part of nearly every aspect of life, such as in movies, music and fashion. Sketch comedy is the ideal platform to poke fun at the prevalence of pop culture influences. Draw upon not only personal experience but use influences from movies, music videos and television. For example, you could create a sketch that pokes fun at "The Real Housewives" franchise on the Bravo television channel.
- Situational comedy appears in movies and on television as a means of telling the story of recurring characters. When brainstorming a situational comedy, take into consideration the characters involved and what their objective is. For example, a have a group of friends waiting in line for a midnight showing of a movie; while they wait they encounter a wide variety of characters. To make a situational sketch comedy routine relevant to audience members, choose a common scenario most people find themselves in, such as checking out at the store or dealing with airport security.
- If you are performing sketch comedy show for adults only, your humor may cross the PG-13 line. Adult humor is only appropriate in nightclubs, bars or age-restricted shows. When creating an adult sketch comedy routine, draw upon personal or widespread experiences. For example, a husband and wife are in bed trying to have an intimate moment when they are continually interrupted by phone calls, visitors and nosy neighbors.
