Suffixation in Italian: From Noun to Verb



In Italian, a primary form of suffixation (suffissazione) takes place in the transformation noun » verb with the use of suffixes:
  • -are, ire:

arma » armare
weapons, arms » to supply with arms

canto » cantare
song » to sing

pittura » pitturare
painting » to paint

sci » sciare
sci » to ski

custode » custodire
guardian » to guard, look after

veste » vestire
clothing » to dress, attire

Both of the following suffixes can be considered variants of -are: -iare (differenze » differenziare) and -icare.

(neve » nevicare):
  • -eggiare:

alba » albeggiare
dawn » to dawn

onda » ondeggiare
wave » to ripple, wave, flutter

scena » sceneggiare
scene » to script, dramatize

schiaffo » schiaffeggiare
slap » to slap, smack
  • -izzare:

alcol » alcolizzare
alcohol » to alcoholize

canale » canalizzare
canal, conduit » to guide, channel, steer

lotto » lottizzare
lottery, parcel, batch » to subdivide

scandalo » scandalizzare
scandal, outrage » to scandalize, shock, outrage
  • -ificare:

nido » nidificare
nest, abode, hideaway » to nest

pane » panificare
bread » to make bread

persona » personificare
person, individual » to personify, embody, represent

pietra » pietrificare
rock, stone » to numb, petrify

One particular case of derivation is represented by verbi parasintetici (parasynthetic verbs), those whose structure contains both prefixes and suffixes:

cappuccio » in-cappucci-are
hood, cowl, cap » to cover with a hood

bandiera » s-bandier-are
flag, pennant, emblem » to wave, show off, flaunt, parade

Italian parasynthetic verbs are characterized according to the prefixes:


bottone » abbottonare
button, sprout, bud » to button up

casa » accasare
house, building » to set up house

fetta » affettare
slice, wedge » to slice

punto » appunire
point, dot, period » to get the point

Before a base that begins with a vowel there is the euphonic formad-: esca » adescare (lure, bait, decoy » to rope in), opera » adoperare (activity, work, job » to use, employ).
  • de-:

caffeina » decaffeinare
caffeine » to decaffeinate

cappotta » decappottare
hood (of a car) » to take the hood off a car
  • in- (i-, inn-, il-, im-, ir-):

amore » innamorare
love » to fall in love

bottiglia » imbottigliare
bottle » to bottle up, get stuck

lume » illuminare (base modified according to the Latin LUMEN, genitive LUMINIS lume, luce)
lamp, light » to light up, enlighten

ruggine » irrugginire
rust, grudge, resentment » to rust, oxidize

scatola » inscatolare
box, can » to put in cans

scheletro » ischeletrire
skeleton, frame » to reduce to a skeleton, to skeletonize

There is also the double prefix re + in = rin- (rim-): faccia » rinfacciare (face, surface, skin » to rub in someone's face, to bring up), patria » rimpatriare (native land, country of origin » to repatriate, return to one's country).
  • s- privativo (privative):

buccia » sbucciare
peel, skin, rind » to peel, skin, husk

gozzo » sgozzare
crop, gizzard, stomach » to slit one's throat

natura » snaturare
nature, creation, world » to distort, misrepresent, corrupt

polpa » spolpare
pulp, flesh, meat » to strip the flesh off, to skin, fleece
  • s- intensivo (intensive):

bandiera » sbandierare
flag, pennant, emblem » to wave, show off, flaunt, parade

facchino » sfacchinare
porter, bellhop » to toil, drudge

forbice » sforbiciare
scissors » to snip, cut (with scissors)
  • di-:

ramo » diramare
branch » to branch off

vampa » divampare
flame, flush, blush » to burn up
  • dis-:

bosco » disboscare
forest » to deforest

colpa » discolpare
guilt, fault, sin » to vindicate, clear

sangue » dissanguare
blood » to bleed dry

sete » dissetare
thirst » to quench, slake, assuage
  • tra-, tras-, trans-:

morte » tramortire
death, demise, dissolution » to knock out, stun

vaso » travasare
vase, vessel » to pour, decant

bordo » trasbordare
border, hem, curb » to transfer, change ship, change plane

sostanza » transustanziare (base modified according to the Latin SUBSTANTIA sostanza)
essence, substance, matter » to transubstantiate
