- 1). Work for a florist for a minimum of a year at one of San Antonio's dozens of flower shops and companies. The best way to learn is to work under someone who is good at what they do. Find a florist working in your desired facet of the industry and apply to work for her.
- 2). Attend a San Antonio floral school to gain more insight on the industry. One school, Anthony's School of Floral Designs, offers two-week courses that dive into the fundamentals of professional floral design. The director of the school is a Texas Master Florist.The school offers job placement to graduates.
- 3). Obtain your Texas Master Florist certification from the Texas State Florists Association. Texas Master Florist is a prestigious title given to the best florists in Texas and requires passing an entry exam, filling out an application, taking nine classroom courses and three hands-on courses and passing the TMF final exam.
Several schools exist across Texas where you can complete your entire certification. TMF offers periodic courses for the working florist to keep his skills fresh, many of which are in College Station and Austin. - 4). Get more experience, this time as a Texas Master Florist. Find another florist job--or keep the one you had before--and serve as on of the main designers for the company. Gain experience as a more integral part of the business.
- 5). Learn the business side of running a floral shop from your supervisor, from brainstorming and executing an event, flowers to payroll. A true florist knows about every facet of the industry, from creative to clerical.
