- 1). Tell your child what types of food the restaurant offers before you arrive. If you are unfamiliar with the restaurant, see if the restaurant's website contains menu information. You can also call ahead to ask about the children's menu.
- 2). Show your child the menu and point to any corresponding pictures. Read only the description of the main dish.
- 3). Limit young children's choices to two or three options. The Etiquette Scholar website recommends ordering for children younger than 5 years old.
- 4). Allow an older child to choose the main dish.
- 5). Read the descriptions of any side dishes offered, and allow your child to choose the side dish.
- 6). Read the list of available beverage options, and allow your child to select a beverage.
- 7). Prompt the child to tell the server his or her order. For a younger child, give the order in short phrases, and have your child repeat you.
- 8). Remind your child to maintain eye contact with the server and to include the words "please" and "thank you" when giving his or her order.
- 9). Prompt your child to hand the closed menu to the server after ordering.
