Disability attorneys often get stereotyped as self-serving "ambulance chasers.
" We live in a country where lawsuits are the norm.
There's enough leeway in the law and enough mistrust amongst people that lawsuits are a common solution to one's problems.
Not to mention that, as America is the third most populous country in the world, we have a ton of cases that get processed every day.
With all these lawsuits going through the country's legal system, it's easy to pick out numerous personal injury cases that seem frivolous or unnecessary.
However, I'd like to take a moment to try and turn this conversation toward a different direction.
The first targets people go after when they get upset over these types of legal cases are the disability attorneys themselves.
Some claim that their profession enables manipulative people who suffer from minor injuries to go after hard-working and honest people who caught a bad break.
If you stop and think about it, that notion is a bit absurd.
I would compare that to yelling at a customer service representative over the phone because a product you bought didn't work correctly.
It not their fault, but they're an easy target to vent your frustration on.
We have tort law in this country which covers personal injury and disability law.
There many cases where injury is suffered because of actual negligence of another and compensation is duly deserved.
With the majority being legitimate cases, there are others where people try to abuse their power and take advantage of the law.
That's exactly the reason why we have courts and juries who decide these cases.
Disability attorneys are simply performing a job that needs to be done.
If they did not, then all those cases which truly deserve attention, along with all those victims who truly deserve compensation, would never see justice.
So instead of labeling certain attorneys as "ambulance chasers," perhaps the attention needs to be focused on those who hire lawyers for malicious purposes.
