Sidney Crosby -- Upper Deck Hockey

Sidney Crosby

As a collector, you should be very familiar with that name, and if you aren?t you will be shortly.

As Michael Jordan and Lebron James did before him, Sidney Crosby will help define, and re-define, the collectability of a sport that was in dire need of an insulin shot.

With last week?s release of 2005-06 Upper Deck Hockey series 1, Crosby?s cards have finally reached Lebron-esque or Jordan-esque status, if you will.

Included in the immensely popular ?Young Guns? subset, you should expect to fork over almost a couple of Benjamins for some glossy cardboard containing the Sidney Crosby name and photograph. Yes, you heard me correctly: $150-200 for a 2005-06 Upper Deck Young Guns Sidney Crosby card number 201.

With the Young Guns sub-set randomly inserted at a ratio of 1:4 packs, the card isn?t extremely hard to get ? it?s just extremely popular and scorching hot right now. And, for that matter, so is the 2005-06 Upper Deck Hockey product as a whole.

For the first time in recent memory, a base product has been consistently selling for more than its suggested retail price. This fact is a testament to Upper Deck for taking ownership of the hockey card market and wrestling away the rights to produce hockey product from In the Game.

So, if you want a Sidney Crosby rookie card, you will have to come straight to Upper Deck. Call it a Crosby-Monopoly, if you will.

As is usually the case with a base Upper Deck product, there are a bevy of game-used memorabilia cards and certified autographs, inserted at 1:8 packs, on average.

Our box yielded three game-used memorabilia cards, seven Young Guns, and a whole host of inserts.

We thoroughly enjoyed ripping through this box. The photography and card design are typical high-quality Upper Deck and the player selection is superior.

And while we didn?t land a Crosby, we were still extremely happy with our break.

So remember, if you?re looking to land a cardboard memento of the next ?Great One? Sidney Crosby, the only company that is offering you that chance of a lifetime is Upper Deck.

Lastly, just imagine if you are one of the lucky 10 folks to pull the Sidney Crosby Young Guns retro parallel serial-numbered to 10?

One can only dream, right?
