DC Comics Holy Trinity
Definition:
In the world of comic books, there are characters that define a publisher. Marvel has Spider-Man, Captain America, and The Hulk as three characters that are known the world over and have become identified completely with Marvel Comics. Dark Horse Comics and Hellboy go hand in hand. Image is attached at the hip with Spawn, Savage Dragon, and The Walking Dead. The list goes on and on.
Identifiable characters are what keeps publishers going and DC Comics has three of the most well known characters of all time in their stable of heroes.
Those characters are Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. It could be argued that these three characters are known above all the rest in terms of worldwide recognition and DC Comics have made these three characters the foundation of their universe.
The term Holy Trinity as used in the DC Comics characters is of course in reference to the Christian concept of the three divine beings of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit that live in perfect unison. The Trinity in the Christian faith is the center of the religion and it can also be said that the Holy Trinity of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman are also the center of the DC comic book universe.
The concept has even been pushed through the publishing of at least two series by DC Comics. The first was penned by Matt Wagner and the second was spearheaded by Kurt Busiek as a weekly series to follow up the hit DC Comics series 52. Trinity lasted from June of 2008 through May of 2009 and did indeed last 52 issues.
Of the three, it can be argued that Superman and Batman are perhaps the stronger of the two in terms of sales.
Superman and Batman have multiple comic book titles while Wonder Woman has typically had no more than one self titled comic book.
No matter whom is more popular, it is clear that DC has banked a lot on these three characters and for good reason. They continually have strong sales, are highly marketable properties, and give DC Comics a strong set of characters to base their stories off of. It is certain that the Holy Trinity of DC Comics will be here for quite some time and will continue to influence the DC Universe for decades to come.
