Breast implant surgery has a high risk profile. Consider the following risks associated with breast implant surgery. Some of the complications and adverse effects of breast implants are:
Additional surgeries - and these could be with or without the removal of the device.
Capsular contracture - This is scar tissue that forms around the implant and squeezes the implant.
Pain in the breast
Dramatic changes in the muscle and nipple sensation
The deflation of the saline filled implants may cause a rupture.
Rupture either with or without symptoms (silent rupture) of the silicone gel filled implants.
Here is a list of the most common complications and outcomes that occur in at least 1% of the cases of breast implants at any time.
Asymmetry
Breast pain
Breast tissue atrophy - the skin becomes thin and shrinks
Calcification/ calcium deposits- hard lumps form under the skin around the implants. These can be mistaken for cancer during mammography and this may be the cause for additional surgery.
Capsular contracture this is caused by the tightening of tissue around the implant resulting in hardness of the breast and is some cases squeezing of the implant.
Deformity of the chest wall- the chest wall underlying the rib cage may appear deformed.
Deflation- this is the leakage of the salt water from the saline filled implant owing to a valve leak or a tear or a cut in the implant shell. This will lead to a partial or complete collapse of the implant.
Delayed healing of the wound
Extrusion The skin breaks down and the implant is visible through the skin.
Hematoma - collection of blood near the surgical site
Iatrogenic injury or damage - this is damage or injury to the implant or tissue as a result of implant surgery.
Infection including toxic shock syndrome- This occurs when wounds are contaminated with microorganisms such as bacteria or fungi. If the infection does not respond to antibiotics removal of the implant will take place.
Inflammation/irritation this is a response by the body to an infection or injury.
Lymph edema - swollen or enlarged lymph nodes on account of injury or infection
Displacement or malposition- the implant is in the wrong position in the breast. This can happen during surgery or even afterwards if the implant shifts from its position.
Necrosis- dead skin tissue around the breast.
Nipple or breast sensation changes-An increase or a decrease of the feeling or sensation of the breast.
Palpability
Soreness or redness
Rupture
Seroma
Skin rash
Unsatisfactory style or size of breast
Visibility
Wrinkling or rippling.
