The world of web design has changed in a lot of different ways, but there are some standards that you'll always see coming through. Whether you're looking at web design in Europe or just about anywhere on the net, you'll find that these standards are going to always be in place on websites that have been professionally built. If you're unaware of the basics, then consider this a swift refresher course in what industry standards are all about in consideration of interactive media.
First and foremost, flash heavy websites are never something that you want to bank on long term. There are a lot of great uses for the technology that was originally developed by Macromedia, but in these modern times, it's best to use the process sparingly. Sure, there have been some major updates in regards to this great software, but you don't want to make your site heavy and cumbersome to load, as many people do not have broadband services to establish the appropriate connection.
The second thing that you will note in regards to standards is the splash page is gone in many ways. You no longer need a splash page for a website, unless you are dealing with adult content. Non-adult content can be displayed without a main home page that has a logo or a gate for people to enter the website. There are few exceptions to this rule, but it's a standard in these modern times.
The third major standard that you will want to look out for is music playing on a website that is not necessarily music related. This was a common thing in the 90s and even early 2000s, but it is no longer something that the average person will tolerate. If you're not building a website that is about a musician or music related, it's going to be a hard sell for someone to come to the site and then automatically have music in their speakers. If you have to put music on a website, make sure that you give the end user the option to turn it off, turn it up, or even turn it on to begin with.
The above web design options are standard, and most people will recognize them as such. Whether you're trying to look through portfolios of web design in Malta or anywhere else, you'll see that most professionals in the industry will adhere to the above rules without recourse. Of course, there's always going to be exceptions, but if you see the aforementioned, and apply them, you'll be in line with modern design principle.
