Today's cloth diapering parents have many choices in the way of accessories that can make the process easier, cleaner and greener. Some products reduce diaper rash, while others provide a necessary convenience for busy parents on the go. Parents can find many products to help them stay organized and be environmentally friendly while keeping their babies feeling fresh and dry.
Creams
While babies in cloth diapers are less prone to diaper rash than those in disposables, creams and lotions help keep their skin soft and smooth. The most helpful varieties have soothing ingredients like cocoa butter, coconut oil, shea butter and vitamin E. Some fabrics are more sensitive to certain skin products than others. Look for brands that are specially made for cloth diapers or say on the label that they don't stain. Some creams can change the absorption rate of the materials, so liners may be needed to preserve the cloth.
Bags
Every parent needs a bag to carry the essentials when they're not at home. A bag should have plenty of pockets for wipes, clean cloth diapers, empty bags for soiled garments, a fresh change of clothes, lotions and hand sanitizer. It should also be easy to open and close, with an over-the-shoulder strap.
Fasteners
Many modern cloth diapers come with the convenience of fasteners built in to the garment. Snaps and hook and loops are found on many styles. Many flat and prefold styles require fasteners for versatility in size and fit. Plastic or nylon clips attach to either side of the diaper's corners and anchor to the front panel. Modern diaper pins are safe, easy to use and stay in place. Fasteners come in many different colors and coordinate well with whites, colors and prints.
Covers
Diaper covers are available in a variety of materials, such as wool, cotton and fleece. Some have a waterproof exterior to keep wetness from getting in or out. The interior is soft against baby's skin and helps to keep cloth diapers in place. Some parents use diaper covers instead of pants, especially on young babies and in the summertime. Liners Diaper liners are ideal for use with creams and lotions to preserve the garment's fabric. Many brands are washable and can be used as stain preventers. Inserts Cloth or disposable inserts make multiple changes easier. They slip into a pocket diaper or all-in-one shell to soak up heavy wetting or prevent leaks and messes. Some are biodegradable and flushable, while others are reusable and washable. Laundry Use laundry detergent specially made for cloth diapers. This will help them to last longer and stay whiter and brighter.
