Care, Cleaning and Putting in Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are a blessing to anyone with vision problems eligible for them. Like most people in the last 15 years or so, I've gotten a prescription for contact lenses. At first, they are rather difficult to put in and take care of, but with time and experience it gets easier.

In my experience, keeping contacts clean is the deciding factor for comfort. To start let's learn how to clean your contact lenses. Place the contact lens in the palm of your hand and squirt about 5 drops or so of saline solution onto them. Using your pointer finger from your opposite hand, gently rub the contact through the solution in circles. Flip the contact lens over and repeat. Now pinch the lens between your forefinger and thumb and rinse the lens off with fresh solution. You are now ready to place the contact lens in your eye.

Make sure your contact lenses are right side out. To do this, hold the lens up level with your eye. If it looks like a lip is on the outside rim, it's inside out and you need to flip it over. Place the lens on your ring finger of your dominant hand. With the same hand pull your bottom eyelid down slightly. With your opposite hand pull your top eyelid up. Try not to blink. Look at an object in the distance and slowly bring the lens up to your eye. Remember that the key is to keep the bottom lid pulled down. You can't blink your bottom lid and block the application of the contact lens, so it may be easier to just pull the bottom lid down and look at an object near the bottom of the wall.

Bring the lens up to your eye and go ahead and breathe out while you place it on your eye. After it is on your eye you will want to blink a few times and move your eyes from right to left, up and down. I realize this is a lot easier said than done during the first few weeks. You will probably tear a pair or two getting used to putting them in. it's normal to drop them, tear them, etc. that's why I recommend ordering two boxes the first time. While this is fairly expensive with your optometrist, you can ask them to write you a script and send it to online discount providers like this one: http://www.eyeglasses99.com/index.php/contacts/. If you do this, you will save up to half off on your prescription contact lenses. Good luck and congratulations on your first pair of contact lenses.
