- There are two types of macular degeneration. The most common type of macular degeneration is dry macular degeneration. Dry macular degeneration is characterized by deterioration that occurs without bleeding. The other type of macular degeneration is wet macular degeneration, which usually develops from dry macular degeneration. Wet macular degeneration occurs when blood and other fluids are leaked under the macular as new blood vessels grow within the eye.
- According to the Mayo Clinic, smoking increases the risk of developing wet macular degeneration. Those who smoke should get assistance with quitting from their family physician.
- The Mayo Clinic asserts that individuals who consume foods containing antioxidants have lower risk of developing macular degeneration. In particular, individuals should eat foods that contain Vitamins A, C and E and those vegetables in the leafy green category. Antioxidants, such as zeaxanthin, lutein and Omega-3 fatty acids, may also reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration. Recommended foods include corn, eggs, fish and almonds.
- Getting regular eye exams will not prevent macular degeneration. However, regular eye exams can help to identify macular degeneration in the early stages so that treatments may prevent further damage. Supplements containing zinc, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, copper and beta carotene may slow the progression of the disease.
