Someone addicted to cocaine is aware, if only down deep, that something is seriously wrong. The problem is that it is almost impossible to step back and work out what must be done to resolve this very real problem. The cravings and physical sickness prevent an addict from getting analytical about it. They are driven by the craving for more cocaine. And unfortunately, they will do just about anything to get more.

A person is not bad because they are addicted. They are simply caught in a dangerous trap. They need help to climb out of this trap as it is very unlikely they can do it on their own. There have been studies with animals that have been made addicted and it was found that they would not drink or eat while only trying to get more cocaine. They would have continued to ingest the drug until they died if not for the scientists limiting their supply.

Cocaine is an innocent-looking white powder which can be injected, snorted or smoked. It goes by other names such as blow, coke, C and snow. When purchased on the street, a person does not know what he may be getting. Dealers cut it with:

* Sugar
* Talcum powder
* Other drugs

The effects of cocaine can be short-term or long-term, and none are good. Needle use especially makes it dangerous as the person is putting himself at risk for contracting HIV/AIDS. Additionally, a person's judgment is impaired when on the drug, and accidents are common.

When trying to get that high, a user will often take too much, and this can result in an overdose. Death is always something just around the corner with addiction. Whether from an overdose or from drug-related crime and violence, death is always a threat and a possibility when leading a life of drug abuse.

If suspecting someone you love is addicted to cocaine, you should do everything possible to help them find effective recovery. Not all treatment centers are alike and it takes some searching to find a successful treatment. But it can be done.
