- 1). Test an inconspicuous sample area of concrete with the stain to be sure the color matches your expectations. Concrete stain causes a chemical reaction to create the color on the concrete and the exact color results can vary from the intended color.
- 2). Prepare the concrete surface to be stained by filling any cracks, removing any stains and vacuuming away any debris. Wash the entire area with a trisodium phosphate cleaner mixed with water. Rinse the floor with water.
- 3). Apply an etching formula with a mop to prepare the concrete to accept the stain. The etching formula will give the floor a sandpaper feel and the rough texture allows the stain to penetrate the surface. Wash the floor with clean water and then allow the area to dry for 24 hours.
- 4). Mix the stain according to the manufacturer's instructions, generally at a ratio of 1 part stain to 1 part water and fill the concrete stain pump sprayer with the mixture.
- 5). Spray the concrete stain mixture onto the concrete surface, beginning at one end of the area and progressing through to the other end. Travel from left to right as you apply the stain until you reach the edge of the concrete. Return to the left side to begin the next "row." This helps to ensure that the stain does not dry before the next "row" is stained. Let the completed concrete stain dry for 4 to 6 hours.
- 6). Apply a second coat of stain for a deeper, richer color. Let the stain dry for 24 hours.
- 7). Use a large 5-gallon bucket and a roller to apply a concrete sealant to the entire area. Allow the sealant to dry for 4 to 6 hours and then apply a second layer of sealant.
