  Renew your CPR certification before the expiration date. Each certification period lasts two years. Some certification programs and institutions may even require you to repeat the entire CPR class if your card has been expired for six months or longer. Keep track of the renewal date, and take care of it in a timely manner. Online classes simplify renewal, and the entire process may require only an hour or two.

  Select a program whose curriculum follows guidelines established by the American Heart Association and ILCOR/ECC (International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation) / (Emergency Cardiovascular Care). The latter is an international association that develops and reviews the latest resuscitation standards and maintains continuity of practice, curriculum and CPR methods. This training is generally accepted universally but is not mandated. Any organization is free to develop its own CPR curriculum and teaching methods.

  Some employers may require you to complete a renewal class identical to your initial certification course or obtain renewal through a facility-provided class. This will likely be free for employees. Often, health-care facilities hold regular CPR classes for new employees as well as to recertify older employees. Emergency services, first responders and health-care facilities are required to maintain records of employee CPR training.

  A blended program is a type of CPR renewal class that satisfies requirements for people whose employers require an evaluation of their CPR skills for recertification. The training class is available online with materials provided, including videos and demonstrations. Testing is done online, and the student progresses at his own speed. A skills evaluation must be completed by a currently certified CPR instructor. Approval can be given immediately by instructors holding a certification from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Medic First Aid, ASHI or other nationally recognized program that follows ILCOR/ECC recommendations. ProCPR provides a blended online program in which individuals can be recertified or earn their first CPR certification.

  You can complete some online programs at your own pace, practicing CPR techniques along with a video. The classes include adult and infant CPR. You take a test online, but no skills demonstration is required. You can become certified and earn your first CPR card, or you can renew your present certification, all online. The American Health Care Academy provides this type of online training program.
