- 1). Determine the international mailing service you want to use. It is a good idea to decide before mailing, because the services charge different rates, and most international services of the U.S. Postal Service provide an international envelope or box. The international package services from the U.S. Postal Service currently include Global Express, Express Mail, Priority Mail International and First Class Mail International. If you are unsure, you may wish to use Priority Mail International, as it offers a flat-rate box, fast delivery and insurance.
- 2). Look up the Slovakian zip code. Geo Post Codes maintains a free searchable database of international postal codes, where you can find your Slovakian listing by city. A link is provided in the Resources section.
- 3). Write the address on the front of the package. If you use a package from the USPS, a space for the address is provided. If you use some other form of packaging, write the address either in the very center on the top of the package or on a separate large white piece of paper that you will tape in the center on the top of the package. The format for addresses to Slovakia should have the recipient's name on the first line, street name and house number on the second line, postal code (this comes in two parts, separated by a space) and town name on the third line and "Slovak Republic" on the fourth line. If your recipient lives in a small village, the village name will often replace the street name, and the name of the town in which the nearest post office resides should be placed next to the postal code. Verify with your recipient if you think this is the case. Standard addresses should look like the example below:
Ministry of Education
Stromova 1
813 30 Bratislava
Slovak Republic
Small village addresses should look similar to the following:
Ivan Gasparovic
Horne 63
081 21 Dolne
Slovak Republic - 4). Write your return address in the top left corner on the top of the package. The format should have your name on the first line, street or postal address on the second line, city and state on the third line, postal code on the fourth line, and "USA" on the fifth line. The return address should look like the following example:
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W.
Washington, D.C.
20500
USA - 5). Drop off your package at the local U.S. Post Service if you use a prepaid package. Take your package to the post office to be weighed, priced, paid for and mailed if you have not yet paid postage for the package. Ask for the applicable paperwork for insurance and other options of your choice.
