War
Art Spiegelman?s Maus was the first graphic novel to receive a Pulitzer Prize. The chilling tale of his father?s experience during World War II, Maus made it very clear that comic books could effectively showcase a tragic part of our history and not be silly or goofy.Joe Sacco is another to bring the warfront to the pages of comics. As a journalist who has spent time in the West Bank and Sarajevo, his tale of life during the Bosnian war in, Safe Area Gorazde: The War in Eastern Bosnia, 1992-95, is a chilling tale and the images of those pages are still stuck in my mind.
Conclusion
As one can see, issues like sexuality, drugs, and war are very heavy issues. But as comics continue to become a more recognized and valued medium, creators are ready to tackle these issues with honesty, objectiveness, and creativity. No longer are we being censored in what should and shouldn't be in comics. For some this is a bad thing, for others, this is a basic part of free speech and the first amendment.Although comic books started out as, ?funny books," they have matured to the extent to allow us to showcase what is happening in society today. Whether or not you agree with it is moot. The discussions and thoughts you may have because of these comics and others like them are the point and goal, and should not be taken lightly.
