How to Amend Taxes for the Year of 2005

    • 1). Obtain a copy of Form 1040X from the Internal Revenue Service (See Resources). Form 1040X is not tax year specific. You will need to specify that your amended return is for the year 2005 by writing 2005 on line B of Form 1040X.

    • 2). Enter your tax information on Form 1040x by using the Form 1040X Instructions (See Resources) including the reason as to why you are amending your return. Acceptable reasons for amendment include unreported income, mistakes in calculating your taxes, additional tax information you wish to include for the year of 2005 and to report Net Carryovers or Net Loss for the tax year 2005.

    • 3). Recalculate the additional information you've entered onto your amended return and review your return once you've finished entering your information. Any mistakes will need to be corrected before your amended return is signed and mailed to the Internal Revenue Service.

    • 4). Sign and date Form 1040X and mail it, along with a copy of your originally filed 2005 income tax return to the appropriate address, which is based on the state where you live (See Resources). These addresses are listed on the 1040X Instruction form.
