Proper Cleaning and Maintenance Methods for Your Bathroom Mirrors

No bathroom could survive without even a single piece of mirror. Bathroom mirrors, as you know, are de rigueur for any home. Be it a simple medicine cabinet or a sprawling flushed mirror, you need to have something to give you a preview of your after-shower look. The problem with owning a bathroom mirror, however, lies in the maintenance. Fogging is the absolute worst headache for bathroom mirror owners, and here are some tips to help you fight it.

Ventilation

The main cause of fogging in your bathroom mirrors is the lack of ventilation. Especially when you shower, you'll notice the mirror to cloud up a bit if there is an absence of an exit the fog can use. This is the most common gripe of couples using the bathroom together. You can bet that the mirror will get foggy when somebody else is using the shower. So, how can you use the mirror? Your answer is ventilation.

Installing an exhaust fan that can expel the odor and mist in the bathroom is great. Not only will be you able to use the bathroom at the same time but look at yourself clearly in your bathroom mirrors regardless of the amount of steam or mist from the shower.

Alternatives

But if you can’t install an exhaust for the bathroom, you can still opt for a quick clean. The first step is to purchase an excellent glass cleaner. You see, the fog or mist from the shower can carry soap chemicals to the mirror. If you let it dry, you’ll notice soap scum buildup on the surface. Eventually, this will degrade the quality of the reflection, or block it out completely, if left for prolonged periods. Use the glass cleaner to remove the soap scum and dry it with an old newspaper or paper towel.

If you notice a streaky version of yourself in the mirror, don’t fret; it’s not you, it’s the dirty surface. What you can do is to combine a gallon or water with one-third-cup of ammonia. Using a sprayer, apply the mixture directly on the mirror and buff with a chamois or paper towel.

Don’t have ammonia? You can substitute it with vinegar. Prepare the vinegar on a bowl. Wipe your bathroom mirrors with a crumpled sheet of newspaper dipped in vinegar. Next, dry the mirror with a soft cloth or a dry paper. This will surely make your mirrors look shiny and new.
