AMRITSAR: Snoring has emerged as one of the commonest causes of couples opting for separate bedrooms or filing for divorce in western countries.
However, few are aware that in many cases Obstructive Sleep Aponea (OSA) wherein snoring is accompanied with breathlessness for few moments during sleep is life threatening, causing heart or respiratory failure, irregular heart beating and increased resistance to insulin. The condition can be easily cured; saving a dear one's life by timely medical help.
On the concluding day of two-day seminar (CME) and Workshop held by Department of ENT & Head Neck Surgery of Amandeep Hospital, Amritsar to mark the €World Sleep day€, as many as four €Live Surgeries' were conducted to rectify the sleep disorder of OSA. For diagnosis the art latest device from UK, at local Amandeep Hospital, in North India i.e. ApneaGraph €" an advance form of €polysomnography'- screens the patient's various parameters during sleep including the times of breathlessness and also correctly pinpoints the area of obstruction in nose palate or tongue.
According to Dr Prahlad Duggal, Head, Department of ENT & Head Neck Surgery at Amandeep Hospital €The whole procedure after diagnosing involved use of new American Technology of €Coblation' a bloodless surgery technique where no bleeding and stitches are required that required only day care procedure and very little pain. Dr. Duggal explained that post operation, the rectification of obstruction not only relieves the patients problem of snoring and sleep apnoea but also brings very positive changes in the quality of life while also saving him or her from developing Heart and other serious diseases.
The three-hour live surgery session on four patients were conducted collectively by Dr. Duggal along with Dr. Srinivas Kishore ENT specialist, Hyderabad and Dr. Navin Patel ENT specialist from Ahmedabad. Most of the patients had the obstruction point in the nose and palate while one was detected with the obstruction at the base of the tongue. The condition is common amongst both children and adults alike exposing both to the imminent dangers of life loss.
On the first day of seminar, as many as three expert lectures on the management of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) were delivered and extensively discussed in a panel discussion involving medical specialists from various fields. Amongst the specialists were Dr Prahlad Duggal, Head of Department of ENT and Head Neck Surgery atAmandeep Hospital. Sharing the stage on paper reading with was Dr Srinivas Kishore ENT specialist, Hyderabad and Dr Navin Patel ENT specialist from Ahmedabad addressed to top specialists of related fields including Physicians, ENT surgeons, Neurologists, Anesthetists and Pediatricians.
The CME cum workshop was conducted on €World Sleep Day' with the aim of creating awareness among the medical fraternity about this silent killer (Obstructive Sleep Apnoea) and to discuss the benefits of these new technologies of €ApneaGraph' and €Coblation' in the treatment of Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea.
