- 1). Talk to your friends and acquaintances about their experiences with lawyers in your community. Oftentimes the best attorney can be found through word-of-mouth referrals. You should ask what kind of case the lawyer worked on, what the outcome was, how well the lawyer communicated with her client and what the retainer fee was. When you come across a lawyer who seems to fit your needs, schedule an appointment to discuss your case. Often these first consultations are provided free-of-charge.
- 2). Call your local public defender's office. If you are unable to afford an attorney, the state will provide one for you for free. Because the public defender has a large case load, you should contact his office as soon as you know criminal charges are pending so you can consult with your attorney before your first hearing. You can locate your local public defender by calling the clerk of the court where your case will be heard.
- 3). Call your local bar association for a referral. The bar association in your area will be able to provide a list of attorneys who do criminal defense work. In addition, if you do not qualify for a public defender but still feel you cannot afford an attorney, the bar association may be able to connect you with an attorney in your community who will take your case pro bono.
