Your body's natural testosterone is essential for health and well-being.
Natural testosterone is a steroid hormone primarily secreted in the testicles of males and the ovaries of females. In men, their natural testosterone plays a vital role in the development of male reproductive tissues (such as the testis and prostate as well) as promoting secondary sexual characteristics such as increased muscle, bone mass, and the growth of body hair. Your body's natural testosterone is essential for health and well-being as well as the prevention of medical ailments that occur when natural testosterone levels are too low.
Biological Effects of Testosterone
The effects of natural testosterone go well beyond just developing your reproductive organs and secondary sexual characteristics. Studies have shown a wide array of biological effects of natural testosterone. Testosterone affects the entire body by naturally enlarging parts of the body. Males have more testosterone than women and as a result also have larger hearts, lungs, livers, etc. Also, your natural testosterone levels effect the brain function and have a masculinating of thought patterns. This is seen in how testosterone regulates acute HPA (Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis) response to environmental challenges. Further, your natural testosterone affects your brain's cognition and your motivation to exert physical energy, hence your libido.
Your body's natural testosterone levels can also be attributed to certain health issues. For example, men whose testosterone levels are slightly above average are less likely to have high blood pressure, less likely to have a heart attack, less likely to have weight control issues, and less likely to perceive their own health as fair or poor. This is not a cause and effect relationship, rather just bi-products of having natural testosterone coursing through your veins.
Increase Natural Testosterone
There are many lifestyle choices you can make that will naturally increase your testosterone levels. Below are some of the most basic.
Lose Weight – Your fat contains an enzyme called aromatase that converts your natural testosterone into estrogen, thus making your testosterone levels drop. This should primarily be done though working out and not calorie cutting since your body stops producing testosterone (along with other hormones) when it thinks it is in survival mode because of reduced calorie intake.
Eat Healthy Fats – While this seems antithetical to the previous suggestion, they are not mutually exclusive. Omega-3 fats, like those found in fish, nuts, certain fruits, and olive oils are needed for your body to produce natural testosterone. If you're trying to increase your testosterone levels healthy fats should comprise 20%-30% of your caloric intake.
Sleep Well – If your body isn't getting enough rest it isn't able to perform its essential biological functions, such as producing natural testosterone. In fact, University of Chicago researchers have shown as much of a 40% decrease in testosterone production in males who didn't get between 6-8 hours of sleep.
Stress Less – When your body is under stress you releases the stress hormone cortisol which shuts down production of testosterone. If you are constantly stressed out, you are constantly not producing natural testosterone your body needs.
