The number of calls from victims asking for police assistance because of a domestic violence situation is shocking. But city police and area prosecutors deserve credit for their increasingly strategic response to a difficult issue and a seemingly Sisyphean battle.

As Jeff Wiehe's Sunday story showed, Fort Wayne police respond to 10,000 to 15,000 domestic disturbance calls a year.

It is a shockingly under- reported crime, so the real rate of domestic violence incidents in Fort Wayne is undoubtedly much higher.

And contrary to the entrenched myth that DV increases during the Super Bowl, it tends to be slightly higher in the summer.

As Wiehe reported, during the period of Dec. 31, 2010, to Jan.1, 2011, the busiest day for domestic disturbance calls to the FWPD was July 21.

July was the busiest month for domestic violence calls for the year as well.

In 2004, the Fort Wayne Police Department responded to a wave of domestic violence deaths by creating the specialized DV Investigation Unit.

Every city officer is trained to deal with domestic disturbance calls, but the members of the DVI unit were hand picked for their skills and received extensive additional training to improve how they investigate domestic calls.

The officers have specific questions they ask to help them determine whether a person is in danger and, if they are, the officer is able to direct the person to specific and immediate help.

In addition to the city police action, the Allen County Prosecutors Office hired Cathy Maggart in 2005 as domestic V coordinator to improve prosecution of domestic violence cases.

The office is also able to push forward with prosecution even in cases in which the victims are too scared to cooperate. Prosecuting D. violence even when victims are unwilling or unable to assist prosecutors is important because domestic violence is a crime that not only endangers the victim, but also is detrimental to the entire community.
