- The Veterans Administration runs hospitals and clinics all over the state of California. California veterans can find VA hospitals in Fresno, Livermore, Loma Linda, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Mather, Menlo Park, Palo Alto, San Diego and San Francisco. Veterans can get free or discounted medical care from these facilities. Service-disabled veterans get priority, as do veterans who can demonstrate financial need.
- Honorably discharged armed service veterans are entitled to be buried in national cemeteries, along with their spouses. The VA also provides a grave marker free of charge for the veteran. There are national cemeteries across California, in Arvin, Dixon, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bruno, San Diego, San Francisco and Santa Nella.
- Veterans who have been disabled as a result of their military service are entitled to a monthly disability compensation or pension. The amount depends on the disability rating assigned by the VA (from 10 percent to 100 percent), and on whether the veteran has dependents. Veterans with dependents are entitled to a higher veterans disability benefit.
- Veterans are also entitled to educational assistance under the GI Bill. This program provides tuition assistance and a monthly stipend to veterans attending any accredited educational institution, including colleges, universities, community colleges, and trade/vocational schools. A recent change to the GI Bill, under the Post 9/11 GI Bill, allows veterans to transfer their educational benefits to their dependents.
