- 1). Purchase a notebook to keep in your vehicle to track your mileage.
- 2). Write your odometer reading on January 1 in the notebook. The Internal Revenue Service and Maryland require the beginning mileage for the year to track the percentage of your miles that you are claiming as a deduction.
- 3). List each business, charitable or medical trip. Include the date, starting and ending points, purpose and miles for each entry.
- 4). Record your ending odometer reading for the year. Use this reading as your beginning mileage for the following year.
- 5). Total each category at the end of the year. Maryland uses the same mileage rates as the IRS when determining your deductible miles. These rates can change, but as of 2011, taxpayers can deduct $.51 per mile for business miles, $.14 per mile for charitable miles and $.19 per mile for miles you drive while moving or going to medical appointments.
