Maintaining Your Trawler The Easy Way

You have been considering a long time about finding a nice used trawler or motor yacht to cruise the ICW and perhaps the Islands; it has been your lifelong aspiration. But you are brand new to big boats and imagine you need to get a better understanding of what it will take to sustain her before you proceed.

Relax, we have all had to start from somewhere. Before the Internet was born it was a learn-as-you-go affair; rarely was there some one about to ask. to help those of you yet contemplating the move, this article is meant to make the procedure a bit easier.

In this publication I will answer this question, What does the upkeep of a pre-owned trawler or motor yacht consist of. I own a 40 foot trawler, therefore, i am going to explain the points as it relates to my boating background.

For starters, keep in mind that upkeep on a yacht will usually be greater the less time you use her. Boat systems must to be worked. This list naturally does not cover items that fail without notice.

Engines

Change engine oils after app. 100 hours
Change transmission oils after 500 hours
Engine zinc replacement annually or as needed
Service raw water systems every three years
New raw water impellers every 2 years or as needed
Change fuel filters every year
New engine belts as needed
Service/clean engine raw water strainers as required
Replace hoses and clamps as needed
Apply touch up paint as needed
Add biocide to fuel when taking on diesel
Polish fuel when necessary

Electrical

Check bilge/sump pumps monthly or as required
Replace pump automatic switches as required
Exercise electronics monthly

Plan to replace batteries every 6-7 years

Waste

Service/clean ElectroScan waste system electrodes monthly
Clean salt-water flush systems with muriatic acid

Underwater

Inspect zincs monthly, replace as needed
Apply new bottom paint out of water biannually
Inspect bottom for hydrolysis out of water biannually
Inspect rudder posts biannually
Inspect running gear out of water biannually
Check stuffing boxes monthly or install dripless packing
Exercise sea cocks at haul out

Decks

Apply new varnish to bright work annually
Strip and reapply varnish every 4-5 years
Repair fiberglass gel coat as needed
Paint decks as needed
Polish stainless steel every 6 months
Clean and polish isinglass biweekly
Replace canvas every 6 years or so
Clean and wax boat on an as needed basis
Inspect dock lines and fenders routinely

Heating/Air Conditioning

Clean strainers monthly
Clean hoses annually
Charge system as needed
