- 1). Prepare your work area. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Protect the table or ground with a layer of newspaper or a small tarp. Set your birdhouse in the middle of your newspaper.
- 2). Use a sponge brush to paint your birdhouse with acrylic paints but do not paint the roof. Add an extra decorative touch of color by sponge painting with a lighter shade. Even a small rag that is bunched up and dipped in paint will create unique designs on your birdhouse.
- 3). Use a complimentary color to paint the roof and the trim with a small brush. For example, use pink paint to color the roof of a purple birdhouse. Allow paint to dry.
- 4). Use an acrylic spray sealer that will permanently protect the paint finish, if you are going to hang your birdhouse outside. Allow the sealer to dry thoroughly.
- 5). Create dots, diamonds, swirls, and other designs with stencils. Paint stripes or squares on the roof.
- 6). Use craft glue to attach embellishments such as lace, buttons, glitter, silk flowers, and feathers.
