How to Seal a Truck Bed

    • 1). Remove any objects and loose debris from the truck bed. Sweep out, if necessary. Remove any areas of rust using the sandpaper.

    • 2). Wash the truck bed liner using a car wash detergent, water and a sponge. Rinse thoroughly with a hose and allow to dry.

    • 3). Tape off areas you need to mask around the truck bed liner with painter's tape.

    • 4). Put on gloves. Stir the sealant with a paint stir stick. Pour the sealer into a paint pan and coat a roller in the sealer. Note that some solvent-based sealants must be mixed with a catalyst. Special rollers are used. This will be noted on the package or kit directions. If working indoors, make sure you have adequate ventilation.

    • 5). Check the temperature of the truck bed with your hand. If it feels hot to the touch, you should not apply the sealant. Park the truck in a shaded area and allow it to reach the temperature of the outdoors. If working in cold weather, check the manufacturer's directions for minimum temperatures.

    • 6). Coat the walls of the truck bed using a dabbing motion with a brush.

    • 7). Roll the sealer onto the truck bed liner with a firm, steady pressure and a back and forth motion, first rolling perpendicular to the ribs on the truck bed then parallel. Apply more sealer to the roller before it becomes dry. On the final roll of each section, roll only in a single direction for an even appearance.

    • 8). Use a paint brush or sponge to apply the sealer into crevices that the roller cannot reach. On surfaces where the sealer might run, check for drips, as these will harden. Remove any drips with a clean cloth and reapply a lighter coat of sealer.

    • 9). Check the manufacturer's instructions on your particular truck bed sealer, as some products require a second coat to be applied after the initial application.

    • 10

Keep the truck bed from contact with moisture for 24 hours as it dries.
