Marketing has changed since the internet. Business traditionally advertised in the yellow pages, newspaper, on radio, and television. Now, many ask themselves if those mediums even matter.
Most people research new purchases on the internet. Google is the new catalog and brings an almost unlimited number of goods to the market place. Many times Google as a sales medium is better than paper catalogs and advertising ever were.
Still many businesses don't understand what has happened and still continue to dump money into ineffective campaigns. Catalogs, brochures, and print media are far from effective.
Small business has the opportunity of a lifetime. For the first time the internet has given them the opportunity to compete with businesses that dwarf them. Internet advertising can be very cost efficient if done correctly. The cost of a website is all that is involved. Trouble comes in that one website is not as good as another. The best appearing website may also not be the right choice if the designer hasn't considered SEO factors and what it takes to attract visitors.
Pretty sites go up using photographic techniques or flash and not enough words. Search engines use words to index sites and if the words aren't on the page then the page will not rank well.
Then the issue comes is that the word have to be the right words. Search engines line up the words on your site with the words that people type in to find things. If you aren't using the same phrases, then sorry, you still won't show up. The other thing is, is if your page doesn't appear relevant for the phrase you still won't show up.
