There are many different types of occupations that require people to use a variety of vehicles in order to perform their jobs.
Cab drivers work for dispatching companies, truck drivers for interstate shipping concerns, and bicycle messengers ply their trade through the streets of America's busiest cities.
It is reasonable to assume that these people are responsible enough to not be under the influence of drugs, alcohol or medication that impairs their judgment or prevents them from operating their vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.
However, if these drivers do make a terrible choice and get behind the wheel of their car, truck, cab or other vehicle when they are not in control of their faculties, and they are responsible for causing someone else injury, pain and suffering, the people they hurt usually have the right to take legal action in order to claim financial compensation for their injuries.
There are a number of challenges when a professional driver is responsible for an accident.
For example, who do you take action against? The driver who actually was the instigating cause of the collision or other accident, or the company that chose to employ someone with such wanton disregard for the health, safety and life of those that have to share the roads and streets with them? In the aftermath of a DUI accident caused by a professional driver, the victims often have to deal with a number of insurance companies that represent the individual as well as their company, and every insurance company is looking out for their own interests and bottom line, not the health and misery of the victim.
In the confusing time after such an accident, victims can be confronted with dozens of confusing and conflicting forms to sign and statements to give, and each one of these can be then used as documentation by insurance companies and others to minimize or reduce the settlements they pay out.
Therefore it is wise to, if at all possible, to not sign or give statements to anyone after your accident until you have the control of your mind, and not until after you've spoken to a dedicated and experienced personal injury attorney.
These individuals work for you to protect your rights and your best interests against those that would use your situation to take advantage of you.
They also act as your agent, speaking for you in court and organizing your case against the impaired professional driver, and let you concentrate on the most important part of your situation, that is you focusing your energy to healing yourself and getting on with your life.
