- A job you will love can originate from something you already enjoy doing. Start by making a list of your favorite activities and hobbies. Think back to projects you've been involved in previously, whether for work, pleasure or on a volunteer basis. Consider the type of work you would do if there were no barriers to prevent you from entering the field, like a lack of education, training or contacts. These activities will help stir your imagination so you can begin to explore the possibilities.
- You may already possess some of the skills you may need for your dream job and don't even know it. Make a list of skills you've developed though current or previous employment or from other activities like hobbies or sports. In some cases, you may be able to transfer these skills to help you land your dream job. For instance, if previous employment required you to write detailed reports, you can use these skills in a career as a writer.
- Perhaps you equate a job you will love with one that offers high income potential. You may discover that even if you are successful in the job, you may not find happiness if the job doesn't hold your interest or is inconsistent with your values. Your true dream job may offer low pay, especially in the beginning. However, you may find that over time, your passion for your work will lead you to higher-paying career opportunities.
- For many people, switching from an established career to a dream job is not practical for financial reasons. An alternative is to start a small business on the side so you can pursue your passion without giving up your day job. If your ideal job is to be a wedding planner, start by planning the weddings of family and friends in your spare time. As you gain referrals, your side business may develop into a full-time venture.
