- 1). After cooking and eating, safely burn all garbage and food-coated items such as paper plates, paper towels and food wrappers. Burn grease off of pans and grills, and then wash them with soap and water. Wash down tables with soap and water.
- 2). Store food in plastic ziplock bags, then place the bags in a rubberized or heavy nylon storage bag. Keep cold foods in ice chests and locked, along with food bags, in a car trunk if in a modern campground.
- 3). Suspend the food-storage bag from a tree 100 ft. from the camp if in a primitive campsite. Tie a rope to the closed bag; throw the rope over a tree limb a minimum of 12 ft. above the ground and 10 ft. from the trunk of the tree. Hoist the bag up so it suspends 2 to 3 ft. below the tree limb and tie off the end of the rope.
- 4). Keep the tent clean of all food.
- 5). Clean fish far from the campsite.
- 6). Store food in bear boxes in state and national parks where they are provided.
