The Dodecanese is a group of 12 large islands and 150 smaller islands located in the Aegean Sea.
Each island has its own identity and because of this many people are taking all inclusive holidays in Greece to experience for themselves the diversity that is the Dodecanese.
The largest island in the group is Rhodes, an important regional centre.
Rhodes is home to the Palace of Grand Masters.
Built in a pseudo-medieval style, it was the holiday residence for Victor Emmanuel lll and also for Benito Mussolini.
The island also houses for the Valley of the Butterflies and the beautiful resort of Lindos.
Lindos used to be the capital city of the islands but has evolved over the years to be a stunning holiday resort.
All that remains of its early incarnation is the Acropolis, which towers over the town.
Once inside the Acropolis, you see the remains of a 20 columned portico, once used as a meeting place, a Byzantine church, a 4th century Temple to Athena and a warship, carefully sculpted out of rock by Pythokristos.
Pallas Beach on Lindos is a favourite for those looking for cheap holidays in Greece.
It is situated in a cove beneath the town and has lovely golden sand, an ideal place to chill out and watch the world go by.
Life is not so frantic here.
The only water sports on the island are pedal boats and canoes.
After reading a book on the beach, walk to the Acropolis or wander through the old town and buy a piece of cheap pottery or else invest in a Turkish-inspired kiilim rug.
An ideal hotel to stay in to explore the area is the Mitis Blue Domes Resort and Spa in the resort of Kardemena in Kos; ideal for those looking for all inclusive holidays in Greece.
This opulent 5 star hotel boasts a wealth of leisure activities and superb cuisine.
The spa at the hotel is well known for its range of massages including shiatsu, Indian head massage, reiki and a host of therapies including Thalosso Aqua therapies and Elemis Therapies; just the place to be pampered and invigorated.
For those that book Greece cheap holidays to get away from it all and relax, a visit to the Wellspring Oasis Spa and Sports at the Robinson Club, Diadalos on Kos, is recommended.
It specialises in Deep Tissue Massage, which encourages the body to rid itself of toxins by stimulating circulation.
This process also increases oxygen and nutrients to the muscles, leaving your body refreshed and your mind relaxed.
A visit to the Dodecanese would be incomplete without a trip to the uninhabited island of Farmakonisi.
On the island are the remains of a number of Roman villas and an ancient harbour which is now partly under the sea.
The island is noted for its wealth of flora and fauna which has flourished undisturbed without the presence of man.
Julius Caesar was kidnapped on the island as a youth.
It was said that he was dismayed at the paltry sum demanded for his release and ordered his family to pay double.
When he was released and eventually became Governor, he never forgot his ordeal and had everyone on the island crucified.
It never really recovered and today no ferries stop here and the only way to come to the island is by cadging a lift on boats going to Arki or Gaidaros.
Needless to say, if coming to the island, you need to bring your own supplies as there is nothing on the island - no shops, school, pub or even a church.
