The Options and Risks of Lip Augmentation

Are you thinking of lip augmentation? If so, you should know your options before hand, as this will help you make a much better decision.
Understanding the options will give you the fuller lips you want, while minimizing any risks or unpleasant results.
While some women are happy with their lips, they would consider a lip augmentation because of the fine lines that form around the mouth with age.
These lines are also referred to as smoker's lines.
Whatever the reason for this interest, knowing what is available is always best.
First off, this is not a new procedure, and the concept was developed as early as 1900, although unsuccessful.
It wasn't until the 1980s that there was real interest and promise in the procedures, thanks to bovine collagen, still being used today.
But there are other types of dermal fillers, and synthetic fillers, like Restylane or Juvederm currently being preferred as non-surgical lip augmentation procedures.
  • Collagen: derived from bovine hides, and lasts between 30 and 90 days, as it is absorbed by the body.
  • Dermalogen: derived from the patient's skin, creating a concentrated collagen, that last longer than bovine collagen.
  • Augtolegen: a dermal filler, derived from the patient's own skin.
The material is quickly absorbed by the body.
  • Alloderm:derived from extracted tissues of cadavers, purified for safety.
Alloderm can also be placed into the pink part of the lips for more definition.
  • Radiance: This is synthetic provides results are said to last from 3 years and up to 5.
  • Gore-Tex implants: These come in strips and tubes and are surgically implanted by surgeons.
What are the Risks? It has been found that fat grafting is best to maintain a fuller appearance and softer lip for a semi-permanent result.
The biggest problem is over-filling leaving an unattractive and almost comical look.
Lumpiness in the lips may develop, if there have been over-aggressive injections to the area.
What are the Side Effects? Swelling, bruising, itching or redness in the lips, as well as bleeding.
Unevenlips may result, as can implants moving or breaking through the surface.
People with certain problems should avoid these procedures if: they are allergic to local anesthesia, orreacted to the skin tests, suffer from frequent cold sores, have scarred lips, and infections, have lupus or diabetes, facial nerve disorders, and more.
Fat transfer, lasts longer than other procedures, but scarring or lumping could result.
Gore-tex shows great success but there is a risk of infection or rejection by the body.
Successful lip augmentation requires a great doctor with a high level of skill.
Otherwise the results may be less than satisfactory.
