Over the years, many of us find ourselves with more clothes than we know what to do with.
Whether it's that T-shirt from your first trip to Boston that you refuse to throw out or all those Jimmy Choos that would make even Carrie Bradshaw jealous -- it's no surprise our walk-in closets are unorganized and full of clutter.
But there are ways to maximize space and arrange your belongings in a way that is not only efficient, but also visually appealing.
Below are some organizational tips to help you customize that walk-in closet.
Follow these suggestions and you'll never be left hunting for those cougar-print pants again! 1.
Maximize space by folding clothes Although many people prefer to hang all their items, you'd be surprised by the amount of space you can save by folding your clothes and stacking them instead.
12 inches is roughly the depth of a stack of clothes, so make sure your shelves are also 12 inches deep.
The goal is to minimize the amount of space that is wasted in front and behind.
Remember to leave at least 6 inches between the top of the stack and the upper shelf for easy reach.
Group your clothing together based on category.
For example, all jeans should be stacked together.
And the same thing goes for T-shirts and sweaters.
Put clothes that you wear most often on the centre shelf, right at eye level.
Install some drawers for undergarments and socks.
If you don't have room to install pull-out drawers, opt for small baskets instead.
2.
Make space to hang dress clothes Because hanging clothes can take up more space than folded ones, it's a good idea to hang only dressy items if your walk-in closet has limited space.
Dressy clothes include suits, slacks, dresses and ties.
Put your shortest clothes on the top rod, and then hang the bottom one as high as possible under them.
Once you hang items on the bottom rung, use the remaining space near the floor for a shoe rack.
Purses can be inserted into a few built-in cubby holes.
3.
PVC piping is your best friend Who knew PVC piping could spare you from organizational hassle?Cut pieces of pipe to size and then stuff them with rolled-up scarves and ties.
Arrange these pieces in your drawer or put them in a cubby hole to maximize space.
4.
Make use of multi-purpose shoe racks There are shoe storage racks that come in the form of hanging plastic pouches.
Although you can use this set-up for its intended purposes, these pouches are great for storing stockings, lingerie, and other small items.
And because the pouches hang flush with the wall, you don't have to worry about them taking up too much space.
