- 1). Call and request copies of your state tax return from the department of revenue in your state. Provide the representative with your social security number, filing status at the time of the tax return, year of the tax return, and the refund amount. Depending on the state, a charge will be applied for this service.
- 2). Check your prior state tax return using tax preparation software. Confirm previous state refund amounts by using the same tax preparation software used when initiating your state tax return. If you used tax preparation software from a CD, previous state tax returns may be stored on your hard drive. In other cases, use your user ID and password to log on to the appropriate web-based tax preparation website. Provide the year, refund amount and your social security number.
- 3). Visit the appropriate state department of revenue website to confirm your previous tax refund amount. Some states limit online tax refund tracking to the current year. However, states like Indiana allow taxpayers to confirm previous state refunds online from as far back as 1992. In addition, taxpayers must provide a social security number along with the refund amount, in whole dollar amounts.
