Relish the Scenic Environs of Kodai Lake During a Stay at Hotels in Kodaikanal

The Princess of Hill Stations - this sobriquet could not be more suited to Kodaikanal. Situated at an altitude of around 7200 feet in the Upper Palani Hills, this destination is one of the finest in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The place abounds in scenic natural attractions that attract innumerable tourists, who can stay at any of the hotels in Kodaikanal. It is also a popular romantic getaway for couples and honeymooners. Its lush green forests, cascading waterfalls, exotic lakes, picturesque environs and pleasant weather are sure to fascinate the visitors year-round. The most acclaimed tourist attraction in this hill station is the Kodai Lake, which is located merely 3 km away from the local bus stand. Numerous cheap hotels in Kodaikanal are located near this lake, and offer all requisite facilities to ensure a comfortable stay for domestic and international visitors.

Kodai Lake

Kodai Lake, also known as the Kodaikanal Lake, is one of the favourite spots of tourists visiting this famous hill station in southern India. Spread across an area of 60 acres, this artificial lake was built in 1863 by Sir Vere Henry Levinge, the then District Collector of Madurai. It is located at a strategic location in the town and is surrounded by the verdant hills of the north-western Palani range. The periphery of this star-shaped lake is marked by a 5-km long fine tarred road that makes for a favourite walking path for the locals as well as tourists.

Adding to its aesthetic beauty, Boat Club and Boathouse have been established around the lake in recent times. Tourists can choose from the different rowboats and pedalos (or pedal boats) available on hire at the Boat Club for an enthralling boating experience. A tour around the lake takes about 45 minutes and provides breathtaking views of the scenic environs. Tourists are advised to reach the spot as early as possible to beat the rush for boating.

Apart from boats, horses and bicycles are also available for rental for short periods at the lake. There is a fully-functional public ferry as well, that is open for both locals and tourists, and is perfect for admiring the panorama. Fishing can also be done at this lake, but only after obtaining permission from the Inspector of Fisheries. Boat Pageant and Flower Shows, organised during the summer season, also attract tourists.

The best time to visit this much sought-after destination is in the months of April and May when the weather is extremely pleasant. It would be wise to book a room in any of the budget hotels in Kodaikanal in advance, especially if one is planning to visit the place during the peak season.
