The Effect of Pentoxifylline on Chronic Venous Ulcers

The Effect of Pentoxifylline on Chronic Venous Ulcers

Conclusion

The results of the present study have shown pentoxifylline in association with compression therapy might be beneficial in increasing the healing rate of chronic venous ulcers. As previously mentioned, systemic abnormalities in fibrinolysis, seen in patients with venous disease, contribute to the "pericapillary fibrin cuff," which also may act as an additional perfusion barrier to oxygen and nutrients. Perhaps the fibrinolytic effect of pentoxifylline affects the pericapillary fibrin cuff, and subsequently increases the healing rate of chronic venous ulcers. Further investigation is needed to determine the true mechanisms with which pentoxifylline acts on venous ulcers.
