- 1). Move bird feeders at least 10 yards from the edge of the decking. If you don’t have bird feeders, consider putting some up. At a safe distance, they’ll distract the robins from your deck. Foods that robins are particularly partial to include apples, mealworms and fresh berries. Shrubbery is also appealing to them, as is a birdbath or puddle.
- 2). Place fake predators strategically around the deck area. Hawks, snakes and owls are all potential predators of robins. Fake owls and hawks or hawk silhouettes are available from garden centers. Position the plastic predator on your roof or wall, in a position clearly visible from the deck. A toy snake on the deck is also a deterrent. Move the fake predators around once a day.
- 3). Tie balloons or streamers to deck furniture. Such items move constantly in the slightest breeze, scaring off birds.
