- Research published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" (see link in Resources below) shows that mice given extracts of green tea had fewer incidences of rheumatoid arthritis, and indicates this substance may have the potential to prevent this disease in humans.
- Rheumatoid arthritis is characterized by occasional flare-ups at which times the symptoms increase dramatically. The reasons behind the flare-ups can sometimes be predicted (stress or illness) and potentially avoided.
- Because the severity of rheumatoid arthritis can be exacerbated by excess strain on the joints, maintaining a healthy weight may help prevent many symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
- Medications, such as NSAIDs, anti-inflammatories, steroids and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, can be taken to ward off or reduce the severity of rheumatoid arthritis flare-ups.
- Joint replacement can be an option to reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in severely affected individuals.
