Today courier industry is heavily dependent on Owner Operators for its functioning.
There are plenty of owner operator jobs available. You need to be quick and reliable. Owner Operator's pay works out to be better than just being a driver. The big question is will you make that money?
How much money an owner operator company makes ultimately depends less on the income. We know that courier owner operator job is really not a great pay master. Owner operator's earnings are to a great extent dependent upon tight their operations are run. In practice how well an owner operator controls costs of his operations influnce what he really earns out of this job, the same way this factor influence other industry.
Like in any business there are two kinds of costs for the Courier owner operator companies. There are fixed costs and variable costs. While it is easy to cut a few corners on the variable costs, usually it is the fixed costs – or what are wrongly believed to be fixed costs – that reduce you profits.
Imagine buying a larger vehicle just because you do not want to miss out on any opportunity. Larger vehicle would mean higher payouts for purchase of the vehicle. It also entails higher fuel costs. Most of the time we hear the owner operator say "what can I do about it? I must have the bigger machines to ensure that I do not miss out on any opportunity."
Frankly an owner operator company may be better off missing out those few opportunities every year considering the gain by reducing their finance payments and reduction in the fuel costs.
On the other hand one needs to ensure that small variable costs do not get overlooked. They often creep up without the owner operator even realizing what is happening. For example, "I have been using this PC for last two years. I need to now move on to the latest." Why? Is it really necessary to have the latest and the fastest to print out a few letters or browsing? Or I need new visiting cards. "What I have look so old fashioned." Who really cares as long as you are running your business operations efficiently?
End of the day what matters is that you look at each of your costs with a belief that you can certainly squeeze those costs. And you will certainly make your owner operator job pay well.
