Sleigh beds are a popular furniture piece in the bedrooms of many homes.
They've been around for a long time.
They are typically much larger than the standard bed frame, and would not be appropriate for a small bedroom, but large open spaces would be well suited for a piece like this.
These beds get their name for two reasons.
The head and foot of the bed is shaped in an S form, and they do resemble and old fashioned horse drawn sleigh.
It's not hard to children to imagine sitting on the bed with reins in their hands as they lead a team of horses down the lane.
We played this game as children on our parents big sleigh bed, I'm sure others have done the same.
In the wrong room a sleigh bed is very imposing.
They are large and not changeable into another bed size like some standard frames are.
You cannot turn a queen size sleigh bed into a king size one, so be sure you're getting the one that you want to have for a long time.
Upgrading or downgrading requires the purchase of an entirely new bed.
Many of these beds come as part of a larger set with matching dressers, armoires and end tables.
You can choose to buy just the bed or the entire matched set.
Again, the matching pieces tend to be larger in order to be on a matching scale with the bed itself.
They also make a kids sleigh bed that is smaller in proportion.
They used to be only in white to reflect the innocence of children, but now they come in more varieties of color and style.
