How to Upright a Car Using a Tow Truck

    • 1). Ensure no bystanders are around the vehicle and no passengers are inside the vehicle. Check for any fuel or fluid leaks in and around the vehicle.

    • 2). Reel out the winch cable providing at least 20 feet of slack. This will avoid causing damage to the tow truck when the car is uprighted.

    • 3). Connect the hook from the tow truck winch cable to the upper edge of the car's chassis in the middle of the car. Ensure you have a very solid tow point selected along the side of the car, and not the front or back. If the vehicle is not on level ground, place obstacles in front of and behind it to prevent rolling once turned over.

    • 4). Chock the two wheels closest to the ground with a pair wheel chocks to prevent the car from being dragged by the tensioned tow cable.

    • 5). Use the winch motor, rather than the vehicle engine, to apply tension to the tow cable. Wind the winch slowly. Check to ensure the projected path of the car's fall does not jeopardize the safety of anyone or cause further damage to the vehicle.

    • 6). Remove the wheel chocks when the car has been turned into an upright position. Tow the vehicle away using a flat-bed tow truck, as the wheel alignment will most likely be too offset for towing on a hook.
