Spider Removal

Everyone knows something about spiders. Many people are fans of spiders because they kill insects and are considered an essential link in the natural ecosystem. They are hated by many because of their creepy crawly presence, their gangly legs, and their bad habit of appearing unexpectedly (think Little Miss Muffet)

Either way you feel about spiders, I bet you probably aren't so happy with them crawling around YOUR house, spinning webs, being crawly, and showing up where you least expect them. Everyone's heard about how we supposedly swallow 8 spiders in our lifetime while we sleep (a total myth, incidentally) and it's kind of important in many people's minds to rid their homes of spiders.

The different methods that may useful in removing spiders from your home include both high and lower tech options. Scrub all the windows frames with a mixture of ammonia and water. When that mixture has dried, you should then apply a light treatment of kerosene with newspaper. The kerosense evaporates quickly and the smell will take a little longer to go away, but eventually does The smell is still discernable to spiders, however, who will avoid it entirely.

Some people have also had similar success by treating the window cracks with Lemon Pledge or a knockoff brand. It would appear the spiders 'taste' things via the hairs on their feet and they don't seem to like the 'taste' of Lemon Pledge.

Another possibility that may or may not be actually worth trying is using hedge apples to keep spiders out. Cutting of pieces of hedge apple and placing them near suspected spider entry points is a method sworn to by many. Hedge apples naturally are infused with the chemical elemol, which has been tested to posess many of the same qualities of DEET, the common insect repellant.

For a low-tech product, try buying some long stick glue traps and distribute them near suspected emtry points and in the areas you usually see spiders scuttling around. Just make sure they're safely out of the way of any children or inquisitive pets. Make sure to always clean up trash like cardboard boxes so spiders can't hide under them and always dispose of food waste promptly or it will attract insects, which then bring in spiders.

As a more high-tech spider control option, you should consider a electronic sonic insect repellent. These devices plug into your wall outlet and claim to provide sonic vibrations that are only audible to insects and resonate in the walls of your home, acting as a force field to deter any would-be bug entrants.
